Running with MissyMiss

So...my 7-year-old daughter, MissyMiss, has decided that she wants to be a runner. She wants to train for and run a 5K with me this summer...no more kid runs for her.

I took her out the other day and we ran 1.6 miles with 2 short walking breaks...she did great!!! The picture below is of a picture she drew of the 2 of us running. The other one is just before our run.

Anyone have any experience with kids training for a 5K?? Any advice for me???

You did great. Giving her the breaks when she needs it is important. I have done many 5K races where moms are yelling at their kids instead of encouraging them. I just did my first 5K with my 12 year old and we had a blast.

How cute! My husband and I run and it still hasn't instilled any kind of desire to run in either of my older boys. I have suggested it a couple of times to my 6 1/2 year old, but no dice. I am hoping one of these days the interest will be sparked.

Good for your daughter...how fun...and before you know it she will be outpacing you!

I love that your daughter wants to run with you! My kids haven't done a race yet, but they love to play "race" complete with high fives, and signs, and water stations!

That's so nice... my son dusts me regularly at 5ks, but he's turning 14 this summer :)

My oldest daughter just turned 9. Her first was when she was 6. She has ran several 5K's now and 1 10K. FYI~No matter how much they beg, I don't recommend a 10K until much later :) She did great though I just don't want to risk injury. We just make it fun. Run when she can, try to keep the pace steady, walk when needed, and LOTS of positive reinforcement. I LOVE that she wants to run and want her to always enjoy it. I'm hoping to have a serious running buddy in the future.
