R.I.P. Hampy

It has been a sad day here. My daughter's beloved hamster, "Hampy", had died. She is so very heartbroken. She loved that hamster and took such good care of it. It is our first experience with a pet dying and it is just so sad. We will bury Hampy in the yard and MissyMiss has requested that we get a special stone or statue to place on the spot so she will know where it is. Anyone have any good tips for helping a 6 year old deal with losing a pet?

Oh, Sarah. I'm sorry that MissyMiss's hampster died. If she wants to make him a special stone, check out the craft stores. I know they carry those kits that you can make a step stone. Maybe if she has a hand in designing Hampy's stone that will help her along. I hope she feels happier soon.

I am sorry to hear about Miss Miss's hamster, that is hard for little ones. It might help her if she can pick out or design the stone but it will take time. Hope she feels better soon.

Ian had a horrible time when his first beta fish died last summer. He was very upset for about a week, and then he started to feel better. We buried "Blue Dorothy" under a tree in the back and put a memorial stone over the site. This seemed to help.

He still thinks about Blue Dorothy, which I found kind of strange. Last month, he was acting really sad and he told me that he was missing his old fish. He asked if we could buy some flowers to plant at the site where we buried the fish. So we did, and that helped.

It's really hard when a pet dies. We just buried a crab back by the fish two weeks ago. Ian still goes back and "prays" for the crab. It's quite cute.

Good luck. Just give it time and let her grieve. She'll slowly begin to feel better.

I read your blog regularly (found you through the Quilting Forum), though I've never commented. I felt compelled today though! My parents read The Tenth Good Thing about Barney by Judith Viorst with my siblings and me when I was young and a pet died. It's a great book for kids, and I have thought of it a few times when a pet has died in my adult life.

:(

We haven't had that experience, so I don't have anything to offer.

I'm so sorry about Hampy :(

You probably don't want to hear it, but the best way to make her happy again is to get another animal. I hope she gets through this quickly. (((hugs)))) for your sweet girl..
